Charara
Charara is a National Parks Safari Area in the Northern part
of the country, running along the north eastern part of the Kariba lake shore. This
area is strictly a Big Game area offering 4 of the Big 5 dangerous game.
Some of the best Elephant hunting in Zimbabwe is done in
this area. Elephant here average around 50lbs aside. This area is one of the
best value elephant hunting areas in Africa. Elephant in the area are mostly
bull herd’s, especially towards the Lake, with some cow herds in the thick
jess. A very limited Tuskless cow quote is in this area due to the limited
number of elephant cows. Six Elephant bulls are hunted in this area every year.
Cape Buffalo are of very good quality in this area with both
good herds and good “Dugga Boys” in the area. Cape buffalo hunting is some of
the best hunting a hunter can do and this area is our only area that we will
sell a Cape buffalo hunt on a 7 day package. This is a tremendously good area
for Buffalo.
Lion Hunting is also offered in this area; however there is
only 1 hunted every year so availability is a problem.
Leopard hunting in this area will complete a full safari.
Baits are a problem in this area so it is vital that a Leopard hunt is combined
with a Cape buffalo or a Hippo hunt. Leopard in this area are your typical
Zambezi valley cat in size, so average and not the beef fed monsters that we
get on occasion in the south of Zimbabwe.
Hippo and Crocodile hunts in this area are as good as they
will get in not only Zimbabwe but all of Africa. Hippo hunting can be both in
the water and on land. The lake shore provides the hunter with hundreds of
hippo pods to choose of. For the patient hunter, hippo bulls can get caught on
the flood plains from time to time, providing an exciting hippo hunt.
Crocodile hunting in this area is phenomenal. We can almost
guarantee that a hunter will get an opportunity at a crocodile of over 13 feet
or 4 meters. Limited quotas of only 4 crocodiles are hunted in this area
providing grate quality. There are literally thousands of crocodiles in this
area. Croc hunting here can even be done by spot and stalk instead of the
conventional way of over bait. Hippo is normally used for bait.
Plainsgame is very limited in this area, so a hunter must
realise that this area is first and foremost a big game area and the plains
animal are simply there as a filler.
There is 1 camp available in this area with 3 chalets, all
en-suite. The camp is situated on the Kariba lake shore with a beautiful view
of Nyaodza bay. The rooms are air-conditioned, however this camp only gets a
2-3 star rating by Pro Safaris Africa. The camp is not exclusive to Pro Safaris
Africa and Hunters will very likely share the camp for some days during their
safari, unless the camp is booked completely by 1 hunting party.
